Weight vs Body Composition vs Health
I have this conversation (debate in some cases) with people more often lately. “I want to weigh this much” or “I’ve hit my goal weight, but I don’t look any different”. Or simply “I’m going through all of the motions...but nothing’s happening”.
That’s because weight, in more cases than not, isn’t the ACTUAL goal people are striving to achieve. They want their body to look and feel different. They want to see the muscles they’ve been committing so faithfully to building. They want their waist and chest defined, less jiggle everywhere (ass in particular), maybe see an ab (or the slight presence of them), etc...and overall, they want to feel happier with it all.
After several minutes of conversation and diving into specifics, the bottom line usually reveals itself.
They want to feel more confident. They want to like the reflection they see in the mirror. They want to look better naked.
I have some groundbreaking news for ya! None of those things will be accomplished simply by seeing a number on a scale. I promise. And if they are, the victories will be fleeting.
Because a number on a scale does not equate to overall health. Like...the real, long-term, mental & physical, sustainable, lifestyle kind.
It doesn’t mean someone’s been eating a healthy diet inclusive of fresh and whole ingredients. It doesn’t mean they’re getting all of the essential vitamins and minerals they need. It doesn’t mean they’ve been sleeping enough each night for their body to recover and recharge for the next day. It doesn’t mean they’ve been taking time daily to address the stressors/negative self-talk in their life that are keeping them from truly achieving their goals outside of any physical target.
It’s just a number.
The first item of business, for anyone looking to commit to health or nutrition related goals, should be to dive deep into the WHY. Not the superficial why. The deep down, gut wrenching, maybe you’ve never admitted it out loud, why. Only there will you find the tools, and courage, to successfully move forward.
